The demons had always been creatures of chaos. Mythology speaks frequently of them, but us, the "modern society" ridicules such beliefs as we claim we have science and other such logic to explain supernatural occurrences. Like this, humanity has gone their merry way through the centuries living obliviously in peace, slowly forgetting about the existence of these creatures of chaos, thriving in the shadows of the human world.
That was, until the 28th of June of 1914 when Archduke Franz-Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo. War broke out in Europe and once more the demons flourished in the chaos. Some took part in the war, but refused to side with anyone, attacking any side they chose too. Others merely roamed the cities, causing mischief here and there, but mostly participating in an activity that had been unheard of since the early times: sex with humans. This caused an uprising of half-demon children, known as monsters to the humans and "halflings" to the demons, were often discriminated against in society. During the war years, no one really cared about these new, gifted people with the ability to thrive without chaos and have a slight control over nature.
However, as the war slowly dwindled to a ceasefire, the demons slowly drifted back to the fringes of society, most leaving their children in the human society without parents, trusting them to fend for themselves, as was the demon custom. Halflings, however, were no demons. In the now highly-wary countries, these children were often abused and killed on sight, angering the demons. Deciding to take action, the daemons soon terrorized cities and caused mayhem. The human population was in turmoil, the existence of these beings threatening the very roots of their foundation called "science". Warnings were passed to leave the halflings alone, but all were ignored. The humans claimed that the halflings were too dangerous and unstable, the demons argued that the humans were just discriminating and prejudiced towards them. The demons and humans were on the verge of war until a few demon aristocrats proposed a solution beneficial to both sides: a school for the halflings where they could properly be taught to control their powers and help human society.
After much negotiation, the idea was finally agreed upon and construction was finally started. The location was to be somewhere in the Alps. No humans were allowed to know the location and it was protected by demon magics. It was to be run by demons as to avoid human corruption and no human was allowed a permanent stay. Although this caused a huge uproar, the humans themselves had to admit that it was a necessary measure; the halflings were part demon and the demons were known to be chaotic creatures. Humans were easily damaged and would not be able to survive in the atmosphere. There were negotiations upon negotiations and arrangements upon arrangements as the humans sought to rid themselves of the halflings in their population and the daemons sought to create a haven for their young. Finally, ten years after the war, in 1928, the school was finished; it was named Styrewood Academy.
Since then, halflings of ages fifteen to eighteen were sent to be educated at this school. They came from all over the world, mostly Europe and America though there were lots of Asian and Africans thrown in the mix. Those who had a human guardian could go back for the holidays, while those without would be on full-board. Halflings were educated in all human subjects, including the sciences, while at the same time honing their skills on power control and readying themselves for integration into human society. Years passed and wars broke out, but Styrewood remained peaceful for decades, seeing students come and students go till the present day. No matter what the circumstance in the human or demon world, there will always be one message to halflings and halflings only:
Welcome to Styrewood.
