Normally Jeanne didn't mind being sent off to Styrewood. She couldn't surf or swim in sea water, she missed the seaside sunsets and her parents. She didn't have many friends back in Australia, but it was nice surfing with other surfers, exchanging comments about boards and bikinis and surf shorts and all. But now, now she hated Styrewood with all her might. It was because of the students - they were nice - as were the teachers. They had a swimming pool open all year round and a shopping mall, even.
The main problem was the weather. The damned weather. It was freezing outside and she could still feel the cold all the way in here, wrapped up in the furthest corner of the library as far away from any window that she could find. She had a pair of jeans, boots and legwarmers on and her feet were still freezing. The fur-lined jacket wasn't helping either even though she had buttoned it all the way up. Why, WHY did it have to get so cold here?!
The reptilian halfling had fled to the library in hope of some warmth. She had used to excuse that she had to complete some French homework but ended up forgetting it in her room. Besides, it had been too cold, resulting in her huddling up in a corner on the floor right behind all the non-fiction books. Her brown eyes were staring at the floor in front of her feet, hands clutching her shins to her chest miserably. Having snake blood really didn't help this case.
Right now all she could hope for was something to distract her from the cold - or the cold to be miraculously dispelled for the rest of the year. Were there no other schools for halflings?!

Shadow would eventually tell him those three words; Ace knew he would. Quietly, the young (and short) boy flipped through the pages, small hands gently pushing the paper to one side as he skipped through the story, avoiding any paragraphs that were filled with far too much descriptions and far too many complicated and long words.
Being at the library only reminded Ace Love of his need to get a tutor. He had always assumed that either Lino or Shadow would easily be able to help him, but apparently they forgot about whatever they learned within a month. Lies. Ace knew that those were lies; he also knew that they were joking. Nonetheless, he still wished that they would help him. Heck, Ace had tried teaching himself, but he was far too easily distracted. He needed someone that would beat the crap out of him if he messed up.
Fear had never been that good of a motivation for Ace, but he could make it one if he had to.
Slowly, Ace returned the rather large book to the shelf, walking around the room once he had finally managed to push it back into its rightful location; he was far too short to reach anything, really.
Taking a quick look around, he noticed how the windows were shut, realizing that that was why the room was so hot. Well, it wasn't necessarily hot, but warmer than average considering the weather.
He made his way to one of the windows and opened it. A gust of wind entered as soon as he did so.
Ace almost lost his balance; he hadn't expected the attack (though that probably didn't matter). He glared a moment at the now-open-window, shaking his head as he pushed his hair forward once more. It had been straightened, falling down slightly above his mid-back as it reached its full length. Now, it was completely pushed back, spiking as always and his short bangs perking up awkwardly.
He continued to run his fingers through his hair, teal eyes meeting the ground idly. Why did his hair have to be so stiff sometimes? If the wind had failed to throw Ace to the ground, then its effect on his hair shouldn't be so grand that it'd take him more than a minute to fix it.
Finally, Ace's focus shifted elsewhere, hair actually meeting his shoulders and back and a couple of strands blocking a small portion of his view. He tilted his head to one side as he came to notice a girl. She looked older and taller.
She was also very heavily dressed. Ace had merely worn a black vest over a white dress shirt and skinny jeans. His jacket was somewhere in the library, though. "Um, do you want me to close the window?" he smiled.

The only thing that could be considered as noise in here would be the song that echoed out of Kellin's earplugs and his grumbling stomach. He had gotten out of the cafeteria early to avoid the crowds. He preferred to sit by himself or with just a few persons. The maximum being 3 and that included him.
He found the library his sanctuary, he wasn't really into reading, reading school books that is but the fiction section had always called to him. It took his mind off of certain things and also became a way of freedom. It felt constricting being in this school even if should have gotten used to it by now since he was a senior. He just wanted to keep himself preoccupied so he get too homesick and these books were the answer.
He had been observing two students from his nook, a tiny space between two large shelves. "I don't think they've seen me yet." He muttered to himself. Just then, the grumbling got louder and he made a slight moan that blew his cover. He squeezed out of his corner, his gray low-rise sneakers making little squeaks. He had on a black round neck, long-sleeved cotton shirt and the usual skinny jeans. It didn't protect him from the cold when a small boy opened the window but he didn't mind it and kept the straight face on all though his teeth were starting to chatter. He glanced at him, it look more like a glare and hoped he understood what he meant.

Jeanne allowed herself to close her eyes for a while. Maybe she could fall asleep there and forget about the biting cold. Maybe just for a while she could pretend she was still back at her parents' home and she could be surfing on the beach and battling the waves. She would just be happy like that and not be too cold or about to freeze her appendages off. Arms, legs, head, everything.
Now that she had closed her eyes, she snuggled down into her arms, trying to get some warmth back. Maybe she should have taken a fleece along. It would be a nice idea... except she felt like she was frozen stiff and she really didn't want to move. Outside it would be icy and cold. That was never good. She could almost feel the wind in here...!
And just as she thought that, a blast of blistering wind suddenly gusted through, drawing a huge shiver from the reptilian halfling. This was not her day. Unhappily, Jeanne poked her head out of her huddle, turning it to see who had let the damned wind in. She cracked an eye open gingerly, staring at the kid.
He was short. And his hair was... purple. No, pink. Or maybe it was purple? Whatever it was, it didn't look natural. What's more was that he was tiny. Really. Really tiny. And he didn't look like it was affected by the cold. At all. And here she was freezing her ass off.
"Um, do you want me to close the window?" Jeanne looked at him with a look of dismay in her eyes and nodded her head, shivering miserably. She hated the cold. Normally she would probably have thanked him profusely, but right now it was too cold - especially with the window still open. How was he not cold? That just wasn't fair!
Vaguely she heard the sound of teeth chattering and she pulled a massive amount of effort and focused on the sound, turning her head to look at the other person. Oh, at least she wasn't the only one cold. She was the only one wrapped up tightly though. The cold was probably messing with her brain.

Kellin managed to put up a smile at the girl staring across from him. He even wanted to offer her a hot beverage but didn't know if that would be too clingy. He felt for a handkerchief or a scarf of some sort for the girl. He felt a little pity for her, as if he knew she couldn't handle the cold weather unlike he was. He felt a lump on one of his back pocket and found it was red and black checkered scarf. He slowly stood up from the floor, using the beanbag chairs as support to pull himself up. He walked over to her and handed her the piece of cloth. Kellin didn't know if she'll take it and so he just stood there in front of her, occasionally glancing at her face, to the scarf and vice versa. He wasn't good at introductions at all but he made up for it through times like these.

Ace tilted his head to one side as he noted the girl's dismay and the boy's glare. "Ooookies," he said under his breath, closing the window. The cold wasn't that bad, right? His cheeks were starting to redden, not due to the apparent cold. Ace was starting to feel a tad sad.
Eyes to the ground, he took small steps towards the girl, sitting down next to her. "Sorry," he mumbled, looking up once more. He'd been so distracted by his own thoughts that he had failed to notice the boy now standing in front of him; the one that gave him a painful glare.
Obviously, Ace didn't cope too well with such situations; he usually had people that he actually knew by his side, not strangers.
A smile slowly crept to his small lips.
"I'm Ace," he smiled brightly, shifting his attention from the girl to the boy. "Lovely weather, eh?" he commented. This was Ace Love's way of coping with such situations. This was how he coped with just about everything. He let out a weak giggle as he came to a realization: Both the boy and the girl didn't look like they were enjoying the weather as much as he was.
They also appeared to be much older than him. Fiddling with his fingers, he awaited their response, slightly feeling the need to quite simply hide.
It was Lino's fault that he had laughed. Those two had far much influence on him.

Damn this cold! Why was she here?! She had even forgotten her homework and the library (as many librarians tried to remind) was not a place for socializing! Not that there was anyone around here to socialize with. Except for the tiny kid and the other guy who was all the way over there and much too far to talk with. The other guy smiled at her but he was still all the way over there and Jeanne wasn’t going to move and lose whatever warmth she had here. And he didn’t seem like the cuddly type either. Pity.
“Sorry.” Jeanne nodded vaguely, opening her other eye to look at the kid. He wasn’t a kid. The youngest he could be was fourteen. That wasn’t a kid, it was a teenager. Well, he still looked like a kid though. “I-i-it’s ok-kay,” she managed to stutter out, still feeling miserable. She felt a little guilty for disturbing him – he looked like a kicked puppy. She hadn’t meant to, but she was sure she was going to die if the window was kept open any longer than it had been.
Oh wait. The other guy that was too far away was suddenly standing right over her. Jeanne flicked her eyes up to meet his red ones (oh, he was probably one of those soul halflings, right?) and then looked at the object he was offering her. A scarf. That was nice of him. A cute smile lifted the corners of her lips but she shook her head gently.
“Y-you m-m-must be c-cold,” she told him, eyeing his sparse clothing. He had been cold earlier, hadn’t he? “Y-you t-take it,” Jeanne urged, too cold to say much more than that. Normally she would happily ramble on and on but that was wasting her warm breath and wasting anything warm was not acceptable.
“I’m Ace. Lovely weather, eh?” The reptilian halfling turned back to the kid. Now she had a name to put to the face (or rather, pink-purple hair). Ace. She shook her head, “T-terrible weather,” she disagreed. “Jeanne,” she said by means of introduction before flicking her eyes back at the other boy and asking silently about his name.

"Ace, Jeanne... Kellin." He recalled their names and took the moment to introduce himself. He sat by the other side of the girl so that she in between them. That could help keep the three of them warm, although he's sure Ace wouldn't really need any since he had the guts to face the cold outside that window. "Oh, no I'm used to the cold...You most definitely are not." He unfolded the scarf and wrapped it around her neck. "Some liquor and cigarettes would help too if only it were legal even during this season..." He was starting to think about his friends back at Germany. The smile he had on was slightly fading but he shook himself back to reality. "You've got pretty thick skin and a lot of courage to endure that kind of cold blow in the face and let it mess your hair up, Ace." He gave him an odd look as he looked intently at the color of his hair. He was trying to figure out what color it really was. Pink? Purple? Magenta? Fuschia?

Ace quite simply watched the fallowing events take place. “T-terrible weather," He tilted his head to one side at the statement. "I really can't stand the sun, so I don't mind the cold," he smiled gingerly, nodding twice as he then shifted his attention back to the other boy, rudely staring for a moment or two as his eyes met his; red had always been a color that caught his attention. It had always appeared rather vivid, but then again it was the color of blood. Of course it'd appear vivid.
The other boy, Kellin, wrapped the scarf around the girl's neck; Ace didn't approve of that. It was the same as imposing himself upon her, violating her personal space (well, for Ace personal space is an inch away from the person, so by sitting next to her he wasn't doing anything wrong). Nonetheless, he didn't say anything; the girl did indeed look like she was freezing to death. Was the cold that bad?
"Some liquor and cigarettes would help too if only it were legal even during this season..." Ace appeared rather puzzled at the statement. It was as if everyone felt the need to break the rules. They also came up with excuses. Lino was an exception to Ace's puzzlement though; he didn't give any excuses; he just felt like it sometimes. The young halfling would have said something if not for him recalling what Shadow had told him: something about how he shouldn't just talk to people about his ability to supply them and to not trust and yadi yadi yada.
Ace was also puzzled by the weak smile Kellin had, but he let it slide. What was the point of picking on every single detail? "Well, I didn't know that the wind was gonna blow inside. I just opened it cause it was getting a little hot in here," Ace explained, smile not as wide as it had been, but nonetheless a smile. He tilted his head once more as he noted how the boy was looking at him. "What? he blurted out, statement sounding not as gentle as it was supposed to sound.

"Ace, Jeanne... Kellin." Normally Jeanne would have replied with pleasantries, but she was still too cold to think of it at the moment and hoped he would understand... that they would both understand. She almost smiled as Kellin sat down beside her, creating a nice little warm bubble... or so she was deluding herself.
But how could anyone be used to the cold? Well, they could but Jeanne was still mourning and thinking that it was impossible. She was grateful to Kellin for the scarf though, and offered him a small smile, dropping it almost immediately afterwards and shutting her eyes unhappily and breathing in the scent. It was calming but she was still too cold.
"I really can't stand the sun, so I don't mind the cold." "Sun...!" Jeanne half moaned. The sun... the Australian sun sounded so good and so welcoming right now. As much as she waned to imagine the sun on her right now, it was too cold to do so. "Th-the sun... h-how can you live w-without it?" The thought was impossible for her.
"Liquor and cigarettes aren't good," she mumbled, the stuttering stopping. "You can't surf when you're doped," Jeanne explained, vaguely aware that this was not the beach. And she was nowhere near a beach for that matter. "Cocktails are nice..." she added randomly, slipping into a few murmured words of French.
But she did agree with Kellin - that had been daring of Ace to open the windows. Even if it wasn't too warm. It would never be too warm in the winter. Never. Head down and eyes shut, she didn't notice either until Ace suddenly said 'what'. "Eh?" She mumbled.

Kellin chuckled softly at Ace's reaction. He noticed he was staring into his eyes too. "It's your hair. I can't figure out what color it really is... oh and I suggest you stop that staring contest. I don't want you to entrap yourself." He sounded rather boastful and wanted to explain why but he wasn't sure he could trust them, seeing as they have just met. [/blockquote] "I'm sorry, that last part came out wrong... it's...just me."So much for explaining. Kellin turned to Jeanne this time and checked if the scarf had done her any help. "Umm, since you're not a fan of the "bad stuff" he emphasized on this with air quotes. "How about some hot cocoa or coffee then?" They could walk the cold off and get back here after they had finished their drinks. Nothing goes great after enjoying a warm cup of joe or cocoa than settling down on a bean bag or couch with a book in hand."Well?"

"Ah, I guess I'm just not meant for it?" Ace replied, unsure as to why it was that odd of him to not particularly enjoy sunny days. What was so fun about sunburns? "I was raised by the sea though...spent whatever free time I had swimming!" he added, smiling gingerly. Ace had never found the time to try surfing, noting the girl's obvious need for warm weather and most likely a day outisde of Styrewood. Her reactions were maybe a tad, too much, but that was probably because she was freezing to death, right?
Ace tilted his head as Kellin explained himself, letting out an "eh?" "Um, I wasn't staring...well, I guess I was...but, but...You just have cool eyes," the boy stuttered, letting his lips curve into a weak smile as he gave the comliment. "I'm not really sure as to what color my hair is, can't remember," he added, a small blush meeting his cheeks.
Ace silently watched the other two, awaiting the girl's response. He really didn't mind the coldness and felt as if a hot drink would quite simply put him to sleep. Nonetheless, if they didn't mind him, he would've loed to accompany them.
Unless they didn't want him there.

Jeanne mumbled an ambiguous answer in response to Ace. She thought that everyone was meant for the sea. Especially since Ace was actually raised by the sea. "Where?" She asked, suppressing another shiver. Since she still had her head buried in her knees, she completely missed the staring contest.
"I don't want you to entrap yourself." "Aye," Jeanne mumbled, "he's gay?" What? That was her natural assumption. Especially since he was murmuring something about - what's his name - Kellin's eyes. Yeah, he was sounding kinda gay now. Not that she was the one to judge. She'd ogled her own share. Of both genders.
"How about some hot cocoa or coffee then?" Jeanne poked her head up at that. "You'd do that?" She asked, eyes shining happily, "hot chocolate?" That sounded so good right now. Hot chocolate. Actually, if she could fly to Australia right now, that would be nice.

Hmm, yeah... cool." He snorted, his tone of pure disappointment. Yes, his eyes were cool but these eyes brought him and everyone he loves into trouble. He had to leave everything behind just to get away from the trouble that will keep following him wherever he goes.
He chuckled at what Ace had said about not remembering what color his own hair is. "Maybe it's the color of your cheeks right now?" He noticed his slight blush and decided to make a joke out of it. For the sake of lightening up his mood for him to talk more than just be one with the background.
He turned to Jeanne and grinned "I did ask the question, so I am going to do it. I'd love it if you came with me though. I don't want the coldness to seep through my skin and read deep into my bones." The grin disappeared and a smirk took its place. "Unless you would like another way to keep warm." He said in a sort of whisper, his voice sounded seductive, low and breathy.

"Somewhere in Spain," he replied, having spent a moment or two to think about it. He hadn't spent any time whatsoever outside of his house or the beach; he was home-schooled, and his mother had prefered he remained home and didn't interact with anyone other than his father and her.
"Huh?" he inquired, now completely confused. As far as he could tell, what Jeanne had said was completely random, but all the same, his cheeks became even redder, embarassed. He had always wished to be able to speak casually and easily regarding personal matters. He could around Lino (despite his humorous sarcasm) and Shadow, as well as a couple of other kids he knew.
Actually, he wasn't even sure as to whether he even was gay or not; he knew that his eyes had always avoided the girls', but given his relashionship with Shadow, he really wasn't sure anymore.
"My cheeks?" Ace asked, tilting his head to one side; he was nowhere near being aware of the blush, despite the several amount of times that he felt incredibely embarassed. He pressed his hand against his cheek, wincing when he felt the heat.
Ace's eyes widened when Kellin's words reached his ears, almost glaring as he watched. Joke or not, he certainly didn't approve of this. He looked up at the ceiling, lacking the odacity to intervene; what if it really was just a joke? All the same, Ace didn't really care about that; all he knew was that it was improper.
He let out sigh. Who was he to judge?
