Run. Run, run, Frida. If you run hard enough, if you run fast enough, then maybe you’ll grow stronger.
If only it worked that way. It didn’t matter if she ran every day. Eventually, her lungs would close up and she would need her inhaler. Rap, rap, rap. Her shoes hit the ground. They were built for running. She was not. 3, 2, 1. Her lungs began to close.
No. Frida wasn’t weak. Rap, rap, rap. She would keep going, keep trying. It wasn’t fair that mere genetics could keep her grounded. Keep her weakened. She had to keep going.
But she couldn’t breathe. Frida stopped in the middle of the track, her chest heaving. It was painful. It was frightening. Her chest, her lungs. She was desperate for air but she couldn’t drink it in.
Violet painted fingernails dipped into the pocket of her navy blue running pants. There was nothing there. Where was her inhaler? Her mind flashed back to the locker room. To her little black purse. It was in there. The damned thing was in there.
She couldn’t breathe. Frida tried to stay calm. Going out there without her inhaler had been so incredibly stupid. She had never forgotten to take it before. But there was a first time for everything. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
Her world began to spin as she sucked in less and less oxygen. Panic was making the attack worse. She had to calm down, get to her locker. Everything would be fine once she got to her locker. Frida took a step.
Breathe, just breathe. Breathe. In and out. In and out. Steady. Controlled. She wasn’t getting enough! Her body was starved. Take a step. Eyes on the prize. Frida fixed her stare on her goal and tried to clear her mind. Ignore the constriction in her chest. Yeah, right. Just keep walking. Almost there. It’s only a five minute walk. She could last that long, surely. Just take a step. Keep walking, Frida. Keep walking.
Ouch! The feeling of her knees slamming into pavement knocked what little breath she had straight from her lungs. There was not enough air for her to keep going. Desperately, Frida tried to suck in air. It would be embarrassing if someone found her there, collapsed onto the floor. She wasn’t weak! But she certainly looked it. And she needed her inhaler badly. This was not a good situation.

It was November and cold outside. So what? She could still go out to the soccer pitch in the middle of the track and kick a soccer ball around if she wanted to. There weren't any rules restricting her from doing so and certainly no one to mind. Dressed in a dark blue windbreaker and a pair of knee length shorts, Haruka kicked the spherical object in front of her, walking up to it and kicking it again as long as it was in range. The ball skipped ahead a couple of meters again before slowing down.
Looking ahead, she finally saw the large red track coming up, separating the grassy field in the middle from the grass on the outside of the track. And there was a figure running on the track too! Looking around, the avian halfling raised an eyebrow; there was no teacher nearby, yet this person was running. Never before had she seen someone running around the track in their free time; they must have had good timing to miss her every time she felt like kicking a ball around or running to train her stamina. If she had not expected a person to be doing laps in their free time, she definitely did not expect that person to randomly fall face first onto the track from a walk. She was experienced enough to know that this was the worst sign possible and narrowing her eyes, the ninth grader kicked the ball hard a final time and sprinted after it.
While the ball was headed towards the middle of the field, Haruka had veered off to the track itself, sprinting to the other person. As she grew closer, she saw that the girl was, in fact, on her knees and breathing hard. She wasn't obese so that couldn't have been the cause of collapse, but as she drew closer, she could hear the sound of ragged breathing. It puzzled her for a while, seeing as the girl had slowed down to a walk before she fell, but the horrible nagging feeling that something was wrong just wouldn't leave. "What's wrong?" She asked, dropping down on one knee beside the dark haired girl. Could she reply? Haruka hoped so, she was so out of breath already.

Suddenly, there was a presence beside her. And then a voice. Frida hardly registered the change. She was dizzy and her vision was beginning to blur. She tried to move forward, to get to the gym. She was panicking and her only thought, the one bit of logic that she clung to was the fact that it would all stop if she reached her inhaler.
And yet, she couldn’t do it. Frida, as much as she didn’t want to admit it, needed help. She turned her gaze, darkened from humiliation, towards the presence beside her. It was nobody she knew. Well great. Frida’s expression was prideful and determined; a natural defensive reaction. She did not enjoy others seeing her in a vulnerable state. She wanted to tell the girl to go away, but that would be foolish.
The Halfling looked towards the ground again. It was a big kick in her pride to allow someone else to help. “In. Hay. Ler,” she gasped awkwardly, “In. Gym. Can’t…breathe.” That was enough to get her point across, right? Frida hoped so because otherwise she was screwed. The whole talking thing didn’t go well with her unable to breathe thing. “Please…help.” She couldn’t look the other girl in the eye.

For a while, Haruka didn't speak. The only sound that could be heard other than the wind was that of a ragged panting belonging to the girl that had collapsed. She was still panting heavily and showed no signs of recovering or talking for a while. Haruka's mind began running through the possibilities, trying to squeeze out what little information the teacher had forced her to pay attention to - was it in Sport Science or in Biology?
A heart attack probably didn't look like that, and unless it was a very, very hard punch to the stomach, it wasn't the cause of that. The latter was obviously from personal experienced and not learned in class. Perhaps it was that she had fallen sick all of a sudden, but people were probably smart enough to figure out that they shouldn't be doing laps when they were sick. Suddenly the girl looked over, amythest eyes radiating power and arrogance even though she was clearly anything but. Haruka felt a grudging spark of admiration for the girl, despite the fact that she was still breathing raggedly for reasons unknown to her.
"In... Hay... Ler..." Suddenly the frenetic thinking from before came to a conclusion like a sunray beaming through a cloudy sky; inhaler! That was it! Asthma! The girl had asthma! Feeling proud that she had remembered something from her classes, she almost missed the part about the gym. The inhaler was in the gym, probably in the changing room. Nodding shortly in response to the plea for help, the avian halfling sprang off lithely, rushing into full speed towards the gym. She considered just kicking the door down, but there were a lot more complications if she did that; it was too bad it was a pull door. Skidding to a stop and yanking the door open, she rushed to the changing room, instantly locating a small black bag left on one of the benches. Rushing over, she quickly dug in, long fingers locating the L-shaped device easily.
Pocketing the inhaler, she started on the way back; this time the doors were both push doors and the fact that she wasn't winded helped quite a lot as she sprinted back to the girl. "Got it," she informed the girl quietly as she struggled not to skid to a stop. Whipping the inhaler out, she presented it quietly to the girl, waiting for her to take it. If Haruka had remembered that one needed an inhaler, she did not remember how to use one.

Suddenly, her savior was gone. It seemed to happen so quickly that Frida was left wondering if there had really been a girl there at all. Was she hallucinating? Because that was probably a bad sign.
The girl’s absence felt like hours. Frida curled up on the ground and tried to focus on breathing. In. Out. In. Out. But she wasn’t getting enough. In. Out. In. Out. She was going to pass out soon.
The world around her swam. It felt so surreal. Frida’s panic had given way to a strange sort of dream state as she worked to keep herself calm and breathing. In. Out. In. Out. Breathing became her world.
Only sheer stubbornness kept her from falling unconscious. Well, she was her father’s daughter. Frida’s determination was strong and it kept her breathing just long enough.
The girl returned, but the sophomore was hardly able to register that fact. She was too focused. In. Out. In. Out. But the voice did get through to her. Frida opened her eyes. She hadn’t even realized they’d been closed.
Her amethyst gaze fell on the most wonderful site in the world. Her inhaler! Frida took in a ragged gasp of hair, but could not offer a proper thank you. She was barely hanging on. If she tried to speak, she would very likely pass out.
Slowly, her cold fingers grasped the inhaler and she brought it to her mouth. In. Out. Ahhh. The medicated air flushed through her, clearing her system. Frida closed her eyes and waited for her body to repair itself. That had been far too close for comfort.
When she was certain that she was going to be okay, she finally looked at the girl who helped her. Frida’s gaze was strong and prideful, but her words were genuine. “Thank you,” she said. Then her face turned sheepish as she grinned. “Let that be a lesson to me, eh?”

Haruka was about certain that the girl was no longer able to react to her; she was still breathing in those panicked rasps, but her eyes were closed. She had only found out that fact when the girl opened them moments after she had spoken; maybe it was too cold for her too? Being cold and not being able to breath must feel horrible - but it was better than that in warm weather too, wasn't it? One could easily die of a heatstroke as well; oh the horrors of summer. Too bad that was the best time for doing sports though.
Seeing the girl reach for the object in her palm, still warm from the heat of the gym and herself, she lowered her hand a little so that she wouldn't have to waste more of the precious oxygen that she wasn't getting. As her painted fingernails closed around the object, the girl's skin touched Haruka's and her eyes widened briefly; they were cold! What was that about hypothermia now? The avian debated hugging the girl and sharing a little of her body heat, but decided against it in her fragile state; there were tons of ways that someone could react to someone else's touch. It wasn't she herself that she was worried about, but the girl. Haruka had spent her whole life fighting and learning how to fight; she had been beat up numerous times and beat others up five times more than that. No, rather, she was more worried for the girl, for she had a notorious reputation for reflexive and violent actions. Hurting someone on the brink of death wasn't exactly the nicest thing to do.
Especially when she just recovered. The other girl was finally ok and her breathing was much quieter and regular now. Her eyes were still that brilliant shade of purple, almost the exact opposite of her own amber eyes and quite unlike hers, they were full of strength even though she was weak just moments before. Haruka respected her for that; having the ability to keep awake during the whole thing - most people would have lost consciousness, she didn't. Haruka was debating whether or not to lecture her on remembering to bring her inhaler if she was going to do something like that again when she commented that it was to be a lesson. It was actually a very, very good one. Inclining her head, she replied; "I guess," sitting back on her knees, she gathered that maybe the girl was trying to push her luck; she looked to weak to have a bestial affinity for sure, so maybe she had a water affinity? "Next time you try that, tell me. Soccer is more fun." She informed the girl unnecessarily; it would be nice to play with someone who wasn't lazy and didn't want to go out in this kind of weather. "I'm Haruka; ninth grade." She introduced, just in case. And she had kicked the ball into the middle of the field, right?

“Soccer,” Frida repeated. She frowned. “I don’t know how to play.” That was the one where they kicked the white and black ball around, right? Americans called it soccer. The sane world called it football. Either way, she had no idea what the rules were or how to play. It seemed simple enough. Somewhat brutal, perhaps, but simple. Kick the ball into the goal. Don’t use your hands. Frida probably wouldn’t be very good at it. She couldn’t even handle a lap around the track without her inhaler. Sports were deadly, awful things. Running was easy; and she could stop whenever she needed to. But the girl seemed to like soccer, so Frida refrained from making any negative remarks on the subject.
Instead she jumped to the next interesting thing. “My name is Frida.” After a beat, she added, “Tenth grade.” The venom halfling finally sat up and truly studied the girl for the first time. She looked nice. Dark hair, dark eyes, pale skin. No way was she one of Frida’s ilk. The girl looked too strong and could probably take Frida in a fight. She liked her immediately. Of course, her affections were a little biased since the girl had helped her out.
“It’s nice to meet you, Haruka.” Frida grinned and offered a hand to shake. She was still trying to catch her breath, but talking was okay. Frida felt a little light headed still and wasn’t quite ready to stand up. A few moments of conversation could prove to be just what the doctor ordered. A small rest and then she could return to the locker room to change into her normal clothes. Or maybe she would stay out there with the younger girl. Why not? She had fulfilled her quota of action for the day, but there was never anything wrong with a little socialization. Haruka could prove to be a new friend. Or a new pawn. Frida was more inclined to consider this girl a friend, though. Time would tell which she proved to be.
For now, at least, it was nice to have someone there. Frida was not anxious to be alone after nearly passing out from an asthma attack. Haruka was a good distraction from the scare (Frida did not like admitting she felt fear, not even to herself). It had been lucky that she’d come. Perhaps the luck would continue and they would not have to immediately part.

Haruka was shocked. That summed all she felt up in one perfect word. Amber eyes stared disbelievingly at the other girl as her mind reprocessed the information. Didn't know how to play soccer? That definitely had to be remedied. Very, very soon. When the girl introduced herself as Frida, Haruka nodded, forcing herself to remember the name and the fact that she was one year older than herself. She didn't know anyone in tenth grade; only her older brother, who was in his final year. Well, looked like she did know people now.
Haruka gave the girl her hand, returning the greeting silently before frowning; the girl's hands were cold! "You're cold," she commented bluntly. Her hands seemed to be burning compared to Frida's! Having already trapped one hand, the Japanese girl put her hand onto that hand in attempt to warm the girl up. She may have saved someone from asthma, but if she didn't manage to keep hypothermia away, what was the point? Soccer could wait, really. Make sure that she got warm, then make sure she knew how to play soccer and various techniques.

Haruka seemed to find it strange to learn that Frida did not know how to play soccer. Was that abnormal? To have never played? Frida didn’t know. Spider had never introduced her to the sport and Frida had never attended a normal school. Sure, there were still P.E. classes, but her asthma often gave her a free pass. Or an easier activity. Did they play soccer in P.E.? Again, Frida didn’t know.
The girl’s statement shook her out of her thoughts. Frida blinked. It was true. She was cold. But she wasn’t the sort to complain, even when she should. That would be admitting to a weakness. “You’re warm,” she replied automatically. Very warm actually. Haruka put another hand on top of hers. At first, Frida tensed. Instinctively, she wanted to pull away. She didn’t. Frida found that she actually liked the feeling. It was an oddly intimate moment between two strange girls.
A flush rose to her cheeks. Frida was unused to physical contact. It was not something she disliked, exactly, just something rare. It made her smile. Not her usual, confident smile. This one was softer somehow. Soft was not a word commonly use to describe the halfling.

Haruka nodded in response to the simple answer. They hadn't exchanged many words, but Haruka never saw that there was much need for that. They understood each other perfectly, didn't they? Silence was often her source of comfort; she wasn't sure about Frida, but seeing as she did not really start talking or anything like that, she was probably fine with it too. A companionable silence ensued for a while and the avian halfling looked up, catching a faint blush on Frida's face. Good, she was warming up.
“Are you well?” Haruka asked, looking at the older student boldly. Most Japanese were soft-spoken and shy, but she wasn't. Maybe it was the demon blood as Nekonny was like her too. Troublemakers. She lifted a hand and pointed to the soccer ball on the field. “Do you want to play?” She was still itching to show Frida the sport that she was missing out on. So much easier than running. Then again, Haruka herself was more of a sporty person; she liked playing sports and due to her blood, was good at them.

Frida’s gaze followed the other girl’s gesture and caught sight of the soccer ball. Even looking at the thing made her feel as though she couldn’t breathe, but she fought to keep a neutral expression. With a sheepish smile, she turned back to Haruka. “I think I’ll sit this one out,” she said, “I feel as though I’ve had my fair share of activity today.” That asthma attack had been way too serious for her to blow it off, though she would never say so out loud. It had been a while since she’d had one to that degree. Of course, leaving her inhaler in the gym had not helped the matter.
But Frida wasn’t quite ready to give up on the idea of physical activity. She would allow Haruka to teach her to play another day. Despite her lack of interest in sports, the halfling was determined to defy the odds and overcome her weaknesses. And, she supposed, working on this weakness with another would be more fun than running laps alone. Frida disliked being alone. On the other hand, working with someone else meant they may see her in a vulnerable state. Well. Haruka had already seen her have one attack, so perhaps it would not be so bad if she witnessed a second.

Haruka watched as Frida's eyes looked to the field and lingered on the spherical object for a while. The smile she offered in return did not seem very confident – she could teach Frida, if that was what she was worried about. It turned out, however, that she did not want to play at the moment; if you were prone to asthma like that it must be tough to get over your weaknesses and choose to play a sport, something that would trigger an attack, right after you had one. She understood all of that and all, but there was nothing else really to do.
Wait, she did say today right? That meant that Haruka could ask Frida to come play with her another day, couldn't she? And more importantly, she was cold. If she couldn't warm her schoolmate up this way, they would have to go inside. “Some other day?” Haruka asked, knowing that she would have no trouble seeking the girl out. “We should go inside. You're still cold,” she reminded the girl with a half frown. If not hypothermia, it would be pneumonia that would strike someone that had weak lungs like Frida.

Some other day. It was one think to think about; it was another to have it suggested so openly. But yes. She had already decided that another day would suffice. Next time, instead of trying to exercise her body alone, she would work with Haruka. Frida nodded. “Yes. Another day.” It was not something she was looking forward to trying, but perhaps the experience would be good for her. Well. She didn’t have to worry about it just yet. Not while her body was still recovering from her last attempt at overcoming her weaknesses. She wondered what a doctor would say about her attempts.
Going inside sounded like a wonderful suggestion, actually. The girl was right. Frida was cold. The halfling smiled and nodded. “That sounds like a fantastic plan.” Was she ready to stand and walk? It didn’t matter. She was going to do it. Frida stood up. The going was somewhat slow since parts of her body still felt weak from oxygen deprivation, but she did it by herself and that was what the important part. Frida did not want assistance from anyone when it came to such simple things as standing and walking. She could manage the walk back.

As soon as Frida had given her (indirect) consent, Haruka ran to the field, retrieving her ball and kicking it back to where the other girl was; she was going to kick it all the way back to the changing rooms (for she had decided to follow Frida for no reason) and then back to her room. Really, she had nothing better to do than follow her senior. Haruka wasn't one to bother her older brother now, especially since he found someone special already. Sure she got into a lot of trouble with teachers, but so did he, so they were even... more or less.
When she looked back to the other halfling, she watched as the girl slowly got up onto her feet without asking for help. Must be her nature too, just like how she seemed to like getting into fights and beating people bigger than herself up. “You are ok, right?” Haruka asked as she dribbled the ball back to where Frida was.

Without a word the other girl left and Frida was seized by a strange burst of panic. It was lucky that she was so practiced at keeping things away from her body language and facial expressions. How embarrassing would it be if Haruka noticed how fragile she really was? Frida would be okay but she wasn’t quite ready to be alone. Haruka’s presence was comforting. And warm. Without her there things seemed even colder. The halfling shivered; she really was ready to go inside. She tracked Haruka’s movements with hawk-sharp eyes and a neutral expression, not willing to show how eager she was for the other student to return to her.
At last she did. Frida nodded and smiled in response to her question. “I’ll be fine. Just a little shaky from the lack of oxygen. It passes.” The halfling shrugged it off. She didn’t really want to discuss her weak body. Now that Haruka was with her again, Frida felt better. She began the walk back to the gym. There was a part of her that wanted Haruka’s hand again. The other girl was warm and Frida instinctively craved that feeling. She pushed the thoughts away. Frida was not a creature accustomed to that sort of innocent intimacy.
